An Interview with D.M. Griffin

How has your life experience helped in your writing journey?
My life experience included a dedicated English teacher when I was in high school. She encouraged me in my writing, made us partake in timed essays three times a week, and entered me in a few writing contests. I didn’t like her for it at the time, but looking back on it now, I realize that those timed essays truly developed my ability to write quickly. She also taught me how to self-edit while writing. And her pushing me to be vulnerable and put myself out there is something that stirred up the desire to indie publish.
Where do you find your greatest inspiration?
Scripture serves as my biggest inspiration. My creative process begins with a verse that sparks my curiosity. The allegorical themes in my fantasy series are inspired by the well-known narratives found in the Bible. Whenever I feel like I'm losing my creative spark, God always gives me another wonderful story or idea, helping me to understand the truth found in His Word.
Who is your favorite author? Why?
It is hard to pick a favorite author. I have so many in different genres. In the classics, I would have to say my go-to author is C.S. Lewis. I love his work, have read most of his books, and find that his words stay with me long after I finish reading them. In Biblical Fiction, I love all of April Gardner’s books. Her Yoke of Babylon series is the most recent and a favorite as it depicts the fall of Jerusalem when Babylon took over. In Christian Fantasy, I have two favorites—Carrie Cotten and The Huntress Series and Ashton Dorow with the Royals of Acuniel series. Both authors do a superb job of coaxing tears and leaving deep, spiritual impressions.
Do you remember the first book you read? What sort of impact did it make on you?
The first book I read that made an impact on me was The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe by CS Lewis. I think I was in second or third grade. I remember crying when Aslan died and rejoicing when he came back. I did not grow up in a Christian home, so the significance was lost on me at the time, but I remember it being truly impactful.
What do you need in your writing space to help you stay focused?
To stay focused in my writing space, I need quiet—or at least no conversations. I don’t mind ambient music in the background. I also like a fragrant candle burning and something to drink nearby. I hope one day to have a writing space designated for my purposes, but as of now, I write in the living room, so it can be somewhat disruptive when I need to focus—that is where the headphones come in. 😊
What is coming?
Next year, I have a Romantic Fantasy series releasing along with the second Biblical fiction novel in the Spirit Ignited series. I am so grateful for the inspiration that stirs my imagination and keeps the stories pouring out onto the page. I have the next few years ‘planned’ out as far as my writing goes, but I am always open to sparks of new inspiration that may take me in an entirely new direction. Stay tuned for Hearts of Ash coming in May of 2027.
