Book Review - Jake Rogers' Planet by Philip Wilder

Greetings Everyone,

It seems like the only thing I post nowadays is these reviews. However, I've read so many more books this year, and I have loved them. Helping other authors, no matter how big or small their audience, has been a privilege.

Today, I'm posting a review for Jake Rogers ' Planet. When Philip reached out to me on this one, I didn't know what to expect, but here we are. I hope you enjoy.

See you in the pages,

MJE.

Overall Rating: ★★★★

Overall Description:

Jake is about to embark on a perilous adventure through an alien wilderness filled with hidden wonders and hazards.

While backpacking with his father, Jake Rogers discovers a mysterious portal and accidentally plunges headfirst into an alien world. Stranded on this bizarre planet, he must evade predators, adapt to the strange elements, and navigate the ever-changing landscape to return home. However, as Jake stumbles upon technologically advanced alien ruins, a chilling question arises: Are the aliens still alive?

Even on this terrifying journey, God reminds Jake of the profound verse: “Do not fear, for I am with you.”

My Review of this Book:

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to find yourself on a seemingly uninhabited planet where everything you do counts and each step you take can determine your very survival? If you have, Philip Wilder has done a terrific job bringing that concept to life in his 2025 release, Jake Rogers’ Planet.

Upon opening the pages of this novel for the first time, you will immediately see the foundations of a faith-based and clean story that any young man could enjoy. It is a story filled with adventure and the exploration of a distant planet that speaks to a boy's internal, as well as external, journey toward becoming the man of God he was always meant to be.

As we find ourselves on the planet with Jake Rogers, we see a child who is just trying to find their way home. As the story progresses, we see him find confidence in himself and his own abilities. A boy once angry at the world becomes a man trying to save it from a possible alien invasion, but in the most unexpected way. Jake’s growth is reflected in the world he explores, which Wilder reveals through Jake’s eyes.

One thing that stood out to me the most about Wilder's work was the world-building that Wilder brings to life solely through the observations of Jake and his newfound rabbit-like creature, Jip. The author describes a vivid world filled with unknown creatures and even teal blue skies. At times, the internal dialogue does come across as repetitive, but I think that is purposeful.

There were also times when I wondered if Jake was truly an older teen, because the language made me imagine a younger boy, but this felt deliberate. Jake is a strong boy, but also quite immature. As he grew through the story, the way he spoke did as well, and that is not an easy feat to accomplish in any story.

The creatures the author brings to life are unique and mysterious, and so is everything else. When I was listening to the audiobook version of this, I could almost visualize a good amount of the scenes Wilder wrote into the story. As an honest reviewer, I will also say that there were some scenes that did not come across that way because the descriptions felt thinner in comparison.

Overall, this story is filled with tons of fun little anecdotes that made me laugh along the way. Jake and Jip have a deep bond, and Wilder does a fantastic job building that relationship into the ongoing world around the two characters.

The story felt real and human, even though some plot twists were expected. The author accomplishes what he set out to do with a message that becomes a story about growth and finding courage from within and through faith in God.

I’m excited to see where this series leads and cannot wait for November 2026 to come around so I can read Jake Rogers’ Mission as well.
