Book Review - Awakening the Light by Natasha Woodcraft

I hope everyone is doing well. I've had Natasha Woodcraft's new faith-based fantasy in my "to-be-read" pile since it was released in April, and I must tell you, it did not disappoint. 

I have read some of her other work, but Awakening the Light really stood out to me. I can not wait to share my thoughts on the first book in this series. So here you go.

Awakening The Light by Natasha Woodcraft is a fantastic book and a resource for readers who long for faith-filled fantasy with depth and purpose. This story kept me on the edge of my seat for most of the journey, and several aspects lingered in my mind for days after I finished reading. 

The world- building is phenomenal, and Woodcraft uses some of the best descriptive language I've read in a faith-based fantasy novel. She truly gives this world a unique vibe, and I could honestly visualize almost every single detail of the story. 

Equally impressive is the magic system, which feels both believable and seamlessly woven into the fabric of the world. Rather than relying on lengthy explanations or information dumps, Woodcraft immerses readers directly in the story and allows the magic to reveal itself naturally through the characters and events.

Characterization in the novel was one of it's greatest strengths. Watching the characters grow and develop was my favorite part of the story. Their journeys felt genuine and immersive, and as I read, I truly felt as though I was there with them, witnessing their growth firsthand.

The cultural differences between the tribal ranks really stood out to me. As someone who also writes fantasy stories with a focus on tribal cultures, I appreciated how clearly the tribes of Enjanan were distinguished from one another. Their lifestyles, beliefs, and even their shortcomings were illustrated beautifully, making each tribe feel authentic and memorable.

Another strength of the novel is its focus on Shay and Kellan as the primary protagonists. Both characters are engaging, relatable, and wonderfully developed. Even though they are beings from another realm, their emotions, flaws, and personal journeys feel remarkably human, making it easy to become invested in their stories.

Watching as these characters, and others, start to break free of their limitations gave the world of Enjanan a solid foundation for future books. Each character has a place in the story as well as their own struggles to deal with. That makes for an action-packed read of the story.

At its core, this book shines with its focus on family trauma and overcoming painful memories. The family support system was something I truly enjoyed seeing, even when certain things were overlooked along the way.

The plot is engaging and well-crafted, keeping readers invested from beginning to end. I thoroughly enjoyed following the adventure and discovering where each new challenge would lead. While some of the twists felt subtly foreshadowed, that only highlighted Woodcraft's skill as a storyteller. She lays the groundwork so effectively that each revelation feels both surprising and earned.

It all comes down to a final cliffhanger that, while I expected it, was still incredibly surprising in how the author chose to bring it all to life. The ending was well planned out, and it definitely left me wanting more from her story world. 

Awakening the Light is a powerful, emotionally resonant fantasy. It balances magical wonder with deep, human truths about family, faith, and identity. It absolutely kept me hooked until the very last page, and I can't wait to see where the story goes next.
